Are you Ready for Puppy Bowl IV?
Even though my husband’s favorite team is in the Super Bowl this year, regardless of who plays, we look forward to Puppy Bowl! One of our dogs doesn’t pay much attention to the television, unless there is a phone that sounds like ours on a show, or a door bell rings. Our younger dog, however, is very interested when other dogs come on. Somehow, even if it is a cartoon character, he knows it is supposed to be a dog. So, as you can imagine, the Puppy Bowl halftime show is almost too much for him to handle.
This is the fourth year that Animal Planet has produced the popular Puppy Bowl. Two teams of adorable puppies compete in a dog sized stadium for the trophy. Last year, adult dogs were shown tail gating outside of the game and reacting to the game from their lawn chairs, and puppies got plenty of “time outs”. While it is cute and entertaining, the telecast has an important message, too. All of the puppies playing in the game are shelter dogs, available for adoption. While the individual puppies are only available for adoption in their local area, it hopefully will give viewers the idea that if they are looking for a new family member, the best place is their local rescue group or shelter.
I am very pleased with the “starting line up” which includes Kira, a Chow Chow Mix, Bingo an AmStaff Mix, Attucker and Kimmi, who are representing the Beagles. Of course, Jack, the dachshund will be watched with interest as some of his kind share our home. I’ll be checking the starting lineup and voting for the players during the game! The half time show features cats.
Puppies this year come from the following rescues (from the official site):
SPCA of Anne Arundel County (the cats also came from here)
Westies Rescue of Maryland
Roxie’s Fund
SPCA/Humane Society of Prince George’s County
Homeward Trails Rescue
Frederick County Animal Control
Shenandoah County Animal Shelter
Calvert Animal Rescue League (CAWL)
Tails of Hope
Pet Rescue of Maryland
I’ll be back with more info about the lineup and the outcome of our Puppy Bowl party during or after the game!

Wow! Thanks for the in-depth info about the Puppy Bowl. I’ve watched it every year since it started, but I didn’t realize those were shelter pups…what a great way to raise awareness. The kitty half-time show is fun too

Hey, I really need to pay attention here, don’t I?
I’m a big Super Bowl fan, but I’d actually never heard of the Puppy Bowl. With your permission, I’m going to link to this post in my “For Pets and Pet Lovers” blog to alert my readers there.
And, thanks to your post, I’ll watch at least part of this year’s Puppy Bowl.
Oh, also: We have a cat who apparently isn’t able to “see” our television, although some sounds catch her attention. She is particularly pleased by smooth jazz guitar music — and she get visibly agitated by trumpet music.
She also becomes absolutely intrigued by any sound that comes out of my laptop.
So apparently animals perceive or detect vision differently?

Now that’s my kind of bowl game! Mahalo for the heads-up. I’d never heard of the Puppy Bowl before this.

Thanks, Gary, I’d be honored.
I think Puppy Bowl is on this afternoon, but if they do the same as last year, they’ll rerun it in the wee hours after the game, but check your local listings.

I’ve never heard of the puppy bowl until now. That is such a unique idea. If I had a dog I would watch it with him. Too bad they don’t have a kitten bowl…
