Beach Dreaming – for different reasons
If you read my previous post, you could guess that I am a little stressed out today. I am cooped up in the house with my hand on the keyboard, and a phone on my ear. I just thought of a funny memory that lifted my spirits for a minute.
The older of our two dogs is a real beachcomber. When he came into our family, we lived down the street from a small beach. Every morning, or every time he had to do “his business.” we had to carry him down from a second floor walk up, walk across two lights and then place him down on the sidewalk. The grass that served as his private bathroom sometimes had a little sand that came up onto the grass when it was windy. He liked the times when we had lots of time and took him running on the beach. He had many doggie friends there.
Once I went on a plane trip and our flight was delayed. He was riding with me in the dog carrier, and I tried to take him to go to the bathroom and he would not go on the grass at the airport. The hours went by and the next flight was not for at least six hours, and he continued to hold it. We were such desperate doggie parents to make sure he went, as the flight was long, that we drove ALL the way back home, and took him to his “spot” near the beach. He found his little square footage of grass that had sand mixed in. Sure enough he went right away. I made my flight, but knew that i wouldn’t be able to accommodate his peculiar preferences at my destination.
From then on, I have been a little nervous every time we pass a volleyball court at the park or go to the beach, thinking that he is thinking its his personal litter box. I guess I just have to keep him moving!
I think I need one of those beach cruiser bikes. Or maybe even one of those chopper bikes to keep his little legs jogging along side. It would be a quicker, but relaxing work out for the both of us. Maybe I could retrofit a basket to it and he could ride like the spoiled soul he is, as well. I found them on the Cruiserstyle.com site. Maybe I like them because we ride a motorcycle (not me and the dog…me and my husband.) I think it has something more to do with that the bike is long and low to the ground just like a dachshund. My pups may think its “one of their kind.”
