Pretty Girl with Implants – the WRONG kind.

This pretty brunette unfortunately has something that her skin just grew around and is implanted in her. It is a 3″ length of chain. What is even more disturbing, is that this is not the first time I have heard of something like this. Usually, the collar is embedded. This is the first time I have heard of a chain.

I am at a loss for words on this dog.

And a dog doesn’t get this way by accident. It happens to dogs that have been chained up outside and forgotten about. Or maybe the family justifies it because they go out to talk to the dog everyday. As highlighted in this blog before, dogs, as pack animals, find it torturous to only be able to see their “pack;” their people, just always out of reach. Little by little, because the dog develops sores from rubbing against the chain, and the natural elements. Sometimes these dogs wore the same collars they did when they were an older puppy and their body had no choice but to grow around them or choke to death.

This knock out brunette is a medium sized girl, under 50 lbs and is believed to have some lab in her, but possibly some Aussie shepherd because of the texture of her coat. But it really is a guess. She is so sweet and friendly despite her situation. It just proves the forgiveness that dogs have in them, and the willingness to willingly recognize someone who is out to help them.

Right now, we all need to work to find her a rescue that can start the process of healing her wounds both literally and figuratively. Or, we need to find an adopter who understands that there may be some medical bills that are above and beyond the standard stuff to take care of her neck.

UPDATE: I have learned that she was not chained out 100% of the time as originally thought – she had the choke chain collar on when she was a pup and her family didn’t “notice” the collar was still on her under her thick coat as she grew. (that angers me that they didn’t apparently ever “hug” her as they would have noticed it!) She grew up and grew around it. They cut the excess that was dangling with wire cutters. But the fact remains that her chain collar is still imbedded in her neck with the end hanging out.

  1. people should be vetted before they get to own a dog. i have a dog she’s my princess ive had her 14 years and i cant abide the thought of anything bad happening to her let alone through my negligence. the people who did this to that poor dog should be shot.

  3. It’s pretty well-known that a lot of those new chip implants can encourage growth around them inside a pet’s body. So sad… I really hope they find out what the issue really is.

  4. I am always horrified to see these conditions… even down to some people who give up on dogs because they didn’t live up to their expectations…ie; ” I have given you everything and you still chew up my things!” How stupid!!!! I am in Iowa and cannot do anything for this girl at this point, as I am just relocating and don’t have a real home myself or I would come and get her…. my heart breaks…
I raised great danes for a while, and have seen the things people do…the puppies are so cute you can’t resist them.. why they think the Gods made them so irresistible???????????
I’ll be watching you and your cause…Blessed Be…Kat

G – She is not microchipped. Most dogs like this are not. Even in people, if you have a deep wound caused by chafing, you will see bandages, clothing, etc, start to fuse to the skin if the person doesn’t get proper care.

I think the risks of chipping outweigh the benefits. it is soooo tiny. I should write about a dog named Jax sometime. He was pulled from a shelter, and someone tried to dump him at another one. They had him up on the table to euthanize him, when someone had the presence of mind to check for a chip. Jax is very much alive today because of that tiny little chip. I wish we didn’t need them, but at this time, it certainly has saved many a life.

  9. This makes me ill. My old poi dog (you call them mixed breed) came from a privately run rescue operation. He’d lived his first year or so on a chain and had a mangled hip from being hit by a car the first time he escaped. The rescue operator educated his family and returned Buddy to them, but the hip was not treated and when he escaped again the rescue center kept him. They brought him into their home for over a year while they re-socialized him so he could be adopted. He was about three when I got him. The hip became arthritic and he had to have femoral head surgery a few years later. I lost him in January after eleven years of companionship. He was fourteen and still had scars on his neck from his chain years.

I’m a chip fan. Buddy had one and his surviving pal still does. They have always been kept safe in my yard and home, but I’ve rescued strays and runaways that were identified through chips.

  11. I feel like throwing up. :(

I just sent a donation. It’s not much but I hope it can help. I want to cry and scream and rage against people who are so heartless. I wish I could take in every poor dog like this.
