Wish Oysters

oyster.jpgI am not a meat eater, but I definitely am a seafood eater. Funny that whenever I am at a restaurant that specializes in seafood, most of the people at the table don’t order seafood. Then they are disappointed with their meal. When mussels or oysters are served, I always want to clean up the shells to put in a jar or garden. What occurred to me recently was wondering if anyone ever went to a restaurant and found a pearl in their oyster. I bet that the supplier checked first, however.

I always wondered about the allure of pearls. Don’t get me wrong, I think they are beautiful. When you think about it, however, they are really “calcified oyster spit.” I don’t mean to be gross, but it is true.
What if oysters made something else? I know that sometimes people “seed” oysters with a little piece of dirt so they are induced to create a pearl. What if the oyster went on strike? Or what if someone put something in an oyster and something really different came out? Like a diamond or a lump of coal? Or that Honus Wagner baseball card that is with a bagillion dollars? Oysters are often connected to granting wishes in stories, so why not? If I got that in my oyster, I would sell it, pay off the house, and have enough money to help rescues save as many pets as they could adopt out.

There are some surprises you do NOT want to find in Gulf oysters. A friend of ours was really run down once when she had them, and contracted Gastroenteritis. Before you do the same, you might want to check out BeOysterAware.Com. There are some great recipes for cooked oysters, as well as an explanation of Heat Cool Pasteurization that Gulf Oyster processors are doing to make us safe if we insist on eating raw. Be safe out there!

If you should come back to this blog and see I haven’t posted for months, you will know I found Honus.
