9 Souls for Friday

I am a little sad today. You may have noticed that I have been a little quiet with posting the past few days, but things have been flying from every direction so fast I almost didn’t have time to write it down.

Kaylene’s boss came in and said that “everyone must go.” In reality, we all know that after a three day hold, dogs can be euthanized or adopted out. Kaylene and Angela at Heard County Animal Control try so hard. They really want the dogs and cats to find homes. Sometimes, dogs are saved through “attrition,” as enough others are saved to be able to let them stick around longer. This past Friday, because Georgia, BeBe and a couple more got out, that was the case. Their boss saw that it was getting crowded and saw some of the same dogs that have been there awhile, so there is no getting out of it this time.

There was a lady this week who had a dog on adoption hold. At the last minute she called and said her husband didn’t want to drive that far so they were going to go look at a different dog. How far was their drive? One hour! I had more than one person who would have driven the dog there just to save the dog if the home checked out (If the lady had first wired the money for her spay of course.) They were informed that the dog could be euthanized, and it didn’t phase them.

These are the souls that need to find adopters or rescues before Friday at 5:00 p.m. Earlier would be better!

sharpei.jpg You have seen her face before in this blog. I mentioned her, above. That was one adopter. A man had come to the shelter to see her prior to that and his only question was “she’s a pitbull isn’t she?” I heard Kaylene remind him that her head is just totally the wrong shape and she is not built like a Pit Bull either. Apparently, he had made up his mind. Her sweet, loving nature didn’t win him over.

It is tough being a 40 lb Heinz 57.

She has some wrinkles so maybe some Shar Pei in her. That may help or hurt her. Some people think that a Shar Pei is a type of dog that they *shouldn’t* want.

Head is way too big and wide to have Pit in her. Too tiny to have mastiff in her. Who knows what combination she really is.

This dog is a sweet, loving girl who just loves ear scratches and everything that goes along with it. It just really hits me in the gut to see this gal still there. THIS GIRL IS STILL IN TROUBLE!

Next we have Snoopy. Okay, his real name isn’t Snoopy. But I call him that because he has black patches like Snoopy. He is very, very sweet. One of the problems is that he has just been there too long!

He is getting along fine with all the puppies that are in with him. But he is slightly barkier lately because a shelter is no place for him, and he just sees the puppies leave, and him being left behind. He was a puppy once afterall, and is still not all that big now.

There is another Beagle, a little girl, who came in, and she got snapped up right away, leaving this poor guy behind. His id is 14808 THIS boy IS STILL IN TROUBLE!

lab.jpgNext, we have this guy. He may not be a purebred lab, but his heart is pure lab. ADOPTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He aims to please, his tongue is always hanging out of his mouth, giving him the appearance of “smiling.” He doesn’t pull too much on the leash for being a larger dog. He would slip into just about any family very, very easily.

He is the type of family dog people remember fondly from childhood and wish they could find for their kids to grow up with. What are you waiting for? Please call about him before its too late.

His id number is 15808

All of these dogs are pretty much eligible for out of area adoption. So when in doubt just call!! There is boarding available if there is room nearby if you can’t get there by Friday and are very interested.

Who says you can never find a little dog in a shelter. This feisty rat terrier mix is about 20 lbs. He has been cat tested. He likes people (including kids who behave appropriately towards dogs). He is missing an eye, but that doesn’t seem to bother him in the least. He will bark and bark at the big dogs through the fence, but when he is on the same side of the fence, he gets along great with them. A RESCUE IS IN THE WORKS FOR THIS BOY (BELOW). PLEASE CROSS YOUR FINGERS

Big, healthy looking, strapping young man. This Redbone Coonhound mix is already 55 lbs at 7 months old. He is going to be a BIG boy when he fills out. He has that adorable hound “yodel” and is fixing to please. Don’t let his appearance fool you. He is still a bit of a goofy puppy and needs someone who will teach him more on the leash, teach him the house rules and finish up on some housebreaking once he is home. UPDATE: 9:00 AM THURSDAY. THIS BOY (THE COONHOUND BELOW) IS RESCUE PENDING

A sad, sad story. This sweetie is just a puppy. A black Lab mix. It appears that no one was kind to him. He is very social with other puppies, but he hides his head towards people. He is very gentle, but it is thought that no one took the time to handle him and hug him like a puppy deserves. He has sooo much potential and will do well with a person or rescue who is willing to “take it slow,” so he can blossom. Lots of gentle eat scratches are a must. He is about 3 months old. ID 16708. UPDATE: This pup has a rescue to go to!

This firecracker is another lab mix. She is a medium sized gal who is very active and feisty. She would love a home where someone has time to devout to play with her. If you teach her the ropes, she will be an awesome walking companion too. Maybe you could even see if she would like to learn agility! ID18408. She just came in “under the wire” so to speak where her hold time will be up on euthanization day, so she hasn’t received as much “Face time” as the others.

Nice. Sweet. Calm. Those are the words that describe this sweet girl. Unfortunately, because of her black tongue, a lot of people will overlook her thinking black tongue=chow=a breed that is wrongly discriminated against. She may not have chow in her - she could be just two different retrievers. Her id is 17908. She is not a “cat chaser.” ADOPTED

Last but not least, the little pregnant momma who needs a safe place to have her pups. I am running out of ideas on rescues who have room to take her. Sadly, if she had been spayed originally, the owners may not have felt overwhelmed with the prospect of upcoming pups and may have kept her. Who knows. There is one potentially interested rescue, but need to come back later for an update.

If any of these dogs catches your eye, please contact the shelter. I will do what I can to help you. I am contacting rescues and whoever else I know.

UPDATE: SHE HAS BEEN RESCUED

====================

This Bassett Hound was turned in as a “stray” with a report that he chases cats. Kaylene at the shelter doesn’t think he was a stray because he looks too well taken care of. He has extra time compared to the others, but still needs a home. Still AVAILABLE

Update: New Addition. This girl just came in so has a few extra days. However, the owners reported that she “locked” with another dog a week or two ago. She needs to be spayed ASAP while there is still time to do a spay. So she is an emergency too. She is listed as shepherd/rottie but who really knows. There could be some Dobie in there.  THIS GIRL IS URGENT.  SHE IS “JUST PREGNANT SO NEEDS TO BE SPAYED ASAP!

  4. I sent an e-mail to my coworkers (I have a doggy rescue e-mail distribution list) so maybe one of them can find room. I wish I could do more. We have 3 dogs and technically that is our legal limit. Not to mention our very bitchy female who does not tolerate other female dogs (and males only very slowly).

Is there anywhere to donate to to help save some of these beauties???

  5. Thank you SO MUCH for passing this along. If anyone needs help with transport or boarding, etc, LMK. Yes there is a way to donate to help! If a contribution can be made to a dog’s neuter, I know of a rescue who may be able to take one more. I will send you an email.

  6. I’ve posted on several sites including Petfinder and SGD to see if sponsoring would help to save One Eye Jack but haven’t receive any replies. I’ve just emailed Kaylene about it too. I noticed on the Dogs in Danger website they are listing Heard County dogs with 8 days left, too bad its not true. :(
