A Very Brave Day
It is the start of a new era at the HoundsGood household.
For those of you who are regular readers, I sometimes mention that I haven’t driven in, like, five years. Okay, it is not “like” five years. It actually IS five years, but it is “like” twenty. You may also know that my husband had his license taken away for six months due to medical reasons. Basically, we are pretty much screwed with no public transportartion. We are really falling apart for a younger couple, aren’t we?
This morning, he had an appointment that he had forgotten about, and it was too late to call anyone to try to arrange a ride for him. We don’t exactly live on “anyone’s way” to anywhere.
I got behind the wheel today. I couldn’t believe it myself. Luckily, the way to the office is one long paved road without a heck of a lot of people around. There is just one right hand turn, with a very brief ride down a major road, and then into the parking lot. Let me preface this by saying that the concept of “busy road” is all relative. It is not the autobahn.
My hands had nail marks from how tight I was gripping the steering wheel, and before I sat down, I started to stutter, and I am not a stutterer. The memory of the two horrible accidents I was in back to back scared me a little. Right now, I can’t afford to get as much as a papercut. I made it, but it was really mentally draining.
It gives me hope that someday I can get back to business and help dogs and other animals out “on the ground”. Not to mention a Habitat build, charity yard sales, and a list of about 100 other things I have missed in the past five years. Until then, I will be driving short distances with white knuckles.

Congratulations - that’s really impressive that you drove him there yourself! Best of luck to you in getting back to driving! Just little bits at a time and you’ll be back as good as ever!
I’m so sorry you went through two bad accidents. {{HUGS}}
