I JUST found this post and I am FURIOUS!!!!! I was the office manager at the Chattooga County Animal Control for the last 3 months 2008 under the Director Joe Johnson. The information you printed from Suzanne Royal is a lie! Allow me to clarify...the staff did NOT "walk out", after a great deal of allegations the "Animal Advocates" and Ms. Royal, the newly elected commissioner of Chattooga County decided that he did not want me as the office manager and instructed Mr. Johnson to fire me at the first of the year and advised him of other changes that Mr. Johnson did not find acceptable. However, the last 3 months of 2008, I did send DOZENS of dogs to rescues and at the time we were asked to leave the animal control office, there were NO cats (all had been sent to rescues) and the only reason there were dogs at all was because right after christmas, we had 4 litters of puppies dropped off at the shelter. During my employment, due to my experience, I was able to implement several new procedures including but not limited to downloading a free software program to keep track of the animals and immediately post them on petfinders.com and also implemented an emergency evacuation plan that had never been in place at animal control as well as several other procedures to protect the volunteers and visitors to Animal Control. We did NOT have a 100% euthanasia record during those months and I would be happy to give you the name of the local vet that helped us at the shelter and after I was let go from the shelter she hired me at her office, would she have done so if the felt I would in any way not have the animals best interest at heart. So I applaud all who put any effort into saving our animals, but don't be fooled by the other to think we were not doing an excellent job at animal control but were not political enough. And just a note....the Animal Control Director Ms. Royal speaks of, was fired only months into the job.
