SuperBowl Party Food for People and Pets

puppybowl.jpgThe SuperBowl is in February this year, only a few weekends away.  Many people have parties, though some of them are not really parties because nobody talks to eachother.  Personally, I watch the game for the commercials.   Earlier in the day, the programming at my place is “Puppy Bowl” on Animal Planet, where adorable puppies from rescues compete for MVP (most valuable Puppy).

For super bowl food ideas, there are always special treats for the four legged, of course.  I make dog treats or buy their favorites, or otherwise I keep baby carrots on hand.  If there are quite a few people over that they do not know, I usually set them up with blankets in the bedroom and sometimes there favorite people can pop in to hang out with them for awhile.  However, if the event is low key, they mingle.  If there are little ones at the party, I double check to make sure the menu contains nothing that will be harmful for my dogs.  Although my guests know not to feed them table scraps and always ask before giving them something, the younger folk may drop something or forget.  Therefore, anything chocolate is off the menu and out of the candy dishes.   I usually will omit onions unless it is something that is served early.

For the two legged folks, I like to make nachos in the oven. It is a welcome treat compared to the “processed cheese food” one normally gets. Although nachos aren’t really all that healthy, you can make them much healthier because you don’t have to add salt, can buy low salt cheeses, and fill them up with veggies. There are all sorts of great peppers, lettuces, and other items that you can try.  Also, I buy a funky low salt or organic salsa like mango, peach, or salsa verde depending on the meal.

Celebrations.com has an idea for Butternut Squash Fries. I am going to test drive the recipe rather than trying it for the first time, just in case my usual skills inflict pain on anyone.   It also won’t inflict as much pain in the stomach or hips, either.  Although there are surely people who will be touchy if the menu deviates too far from the beer, chips, dips, and beef fests the SuperBowl usually is.   At least the rest of us will munch on something new.
