Look Like A Million Bucks for Seven Cents

fancy.jpgI have been gathering up ideas for items to make for the Saving Shelter Pets spring auction.   Sometimes, a talented person makes dog collars or sweaters.  I have seen rhinestone collars and cubic zirconia clips in the pricey boutiques and they just aren’t something I am going to splurge for in regards to my personal dogs.  It is not just the money, but the fact that my dogs are boys.

Of course, the markup is steep sometimes, but I was surprised to find out that if you are handy or craftsy, you can actually buy clear cz stones for $38 for a lot of 500. That is a lot of sparkling and bedazzling. Of course, with artificial diamonds, you are going to want to set them in a much different way than with other embellishments, but for around seven cents each, it may be worth trying your hand at it.  Pehnec.com has them in many different shapes, colors, and sizes, so you could simulate diamonds, emeralds, tanzanites and rubies.   If they run out, because the gems are lab created, they just make more.  Of course, I make it sound so easy.  I am sure there is a much more intensive process involved than just pulling the finished product out from under the counter like cooking shows do “through the magic of television.”

Do you normally work with fabric, but tried your hand at using gems in your creations for pets or as donations to charitable causes?  Let me know, I would love to hear what your experience was.
