There Is Help for Finding a Pet Friendly Apartment

houston.gifThere are so many pets at the shelter because their people moved. Sometimes life changes, and someone moves in with a relative, or simply moves into an apartment that doesn’t take pets. I have always said that it may take just a little more time, but pet friendly apartments are definitely available. There are alternatives to high rises. Sometimes there are individuals that own three family homes and if the dog is nice, might bend. There are also apartment complexes that have multiple buildings and have a pet building, where they rent to strictly pet owners.

A nice gal named Karen Wells has a Houston Apartments Locator. You pop in all of your criteria, and being pet friendly is one of them, and she will contact you back with properties that meet your needs. Sure, you can look yourself on the internet, but not all properties available will be on general websites. Often, you just see the large complexes that advertise on those apartment finder sites. You have to investigate other details, such as if the lower priced units are actually available or if it is a tease. If you get Karen on it, she’ll do all this work for you and you will only see apartments and rentals that meet your needs. It saves a lot of time, and takes the edge off the panic of finding a place to live with your best friend.

  1. It seems like apartment owners would be worried about damage to the home more than anything else. I think an increased security deposit would solve the problem.

That is true, but some apartment owners have additional concerns. Some don’t allow dogs because of tenants they have had in the past. There is liability when an owner leaves a dog alone all the time and he/she doesn’t stop barking all day. Or, a landlord fears a dog will bite other tenants and passersby. As far as cats, there are folks that don’t have them that have the idea that cats spray everywhere in the house – you really can’t always completely get that out.

Of course, this is all unfounded when a pet owner is responsible, but unfortunately it leaves a bad taste in a landlord’s mouth and they just feel it is easier to deal without potential hassle.

I have seen a few cases where landlords are hesitant about allowing a pet, and a person has pleaded their case with a canine good citizen certificate. However, for the most part, I suggest sticking to looking for places that allow pets in the first place, and then go from there if you can’t find a spot.
