White Furniture + Pets
The very last thing I want with pets is white carpeting and a white fabric sofa. I know a multitude of sins comes out in the wash, but the two seem mutually exclusive, at least if you plan to do anything else aside from getting acquainted with a vacuum and mop. How else does one create a Cape Cod or French Shabby Chic look without white than with either nautical accessories or crumbling antiques?
Add white case pieces, such as white bedside tables, to a room, either as nightstands or end tables. To make the white deliberate rather than displaying color-phobia, choose white vintage hobnail glass vases and similar items to finish off the room. For the floor, you can keep the harwood, pet-friendly tile or existing carpet. (Don’t worry. If you live in the UK and crave white Cape Cod-style furniture, newenglandlifestyle.com carries it.)
If you do not want the room to look like you just took “one of everything” as far as white furniture at the store, skip replacing the nightstands and choose white desks for the house as focal points. Larger pieces anchor the theme of the room, while smaller pieces that have been owned for decades and are the dog’s favorite place to lounge can survive a decor change.
