Deep Discounts on Pet Meds at Walgreens

This post brought to you by Walgreens. All opinions are 100% mine.

I signed myself and my dog up (yes, my dog!) for the Prescription Savings Club at Walgreens recently during a special promotion they ran last month. My dog had an IVDD (Intervertebral Disk Disease). Prednisone did wonders for him when I used it short term in tandem with crate rest and conservative measures. Now, I am weaning him off of it. I usually purchase the med at my vets, and last time I only was given 10 pills. I had finished out his prescription and this filled in the gap to step him down gradually instead of quitting cold turkey.

Here's how the prices compared:

  • 10 pills at the Vet's office: $13.00
  • 20 pills at Walgreens: $9.99

If he needed two prescriptions a year, the Savings Club paid for itself and more. The Club costs $35.00 for your entire family (people and pets), or $20.00 for an individual. If you have full health insurance and a prescription plan, this may not be for you. However, you can sign up your pet as an individual. Pet insurance companies typically do not accept new sign ups for pets over 7 or 8, depending on the plan. There are no age or health restrictions for any species. The caveat is that the medicine must be something that humans would potentially take, but there are many examples (So, heartworm medicine would not be included here.)

Some examples:

  • Prednisone
  • Xanax
  • Rimadyl
  • Hydrocortisone
  • Amoxicillian (and other antibiotics)

While I don't advocate medication as the first and only defense against illness, sometimes a pet needs them as an emergency measure to stabilize their condition. If you are already using any of these medications for your pet, you could save a lot of cash.
