The Commonwealth Humane Society Seeks Aid In Helping Sandy Victims

via TheCommonwealth Humane Society
of North Virginia
I received an update from Chris C. Haslam of Commonwealth Humane Society of North Virginia. The group spearheaded an effort to deliver supplies to rescues and shelters in the path of Hurricane Sandy, primarily in New York and New Jersey. The mainstream media coverage may have moved on, but work is still going on to help. Although the affected groups accepted supply delivers, Haslam asks for additional support. The text of the letter outlining the plan appears, in its entirety, below.
I have never worked with Haslam, but the group checks out. Please continue to support local rescue efforts in your community and lend a hand to this effort if you can.

Dear Rescue Supporters and Friends
You are all hero’s, and first and foremost I want to thank all of you that gave, and gave, and gave again helping meet the dire needs of the animals in NY, the ones hardest hit.
Thanks to you and people like you, we delivered over 50,000 pounds of supplies, two large trucks full, filled with urgently needed food and supplies. This included more than 25 gas powered cooking stoves, three new large generators, hand warmers, human and animal food, and water, lots of water.
The second truck, driven by Our team member and colleague, Denise Painter, started in South Carolina, and after many stops along the way delivered a second full load to Bayshore, Long island. POSH made no attempt to keep the supplies, but rather open handedly gave wherever the need was seen. Thus together, we were able to help a number of rescues, many of which had nowhere else to turn, and whose need was considerable. They included:
Bobbie and The Strays
Anarchy Animal Rescue
All About Spay and neuter
Hempstead Animal Shelter
Canine Counsel
Shelli’s Sanctuary
New Leash Animal Rescue
New Beginnings
Four Paws Sake
Feral Cat Rockaways
Long Beach Humane Society

Phase Two ++
Now we are moving forward with phase two of the operation and planning multiple new transports of the much needed supplies. This part of Phase two is to include others, willing and able to drop off supplies directly to Bayshore Long Island, NY. We have a specific location ready to accept donations. Those of you that would like to bring supplies directly to where the need is greatest, please contact me and I will give you the address to make deliveries. The POSH contact is Mellie McClellan at 1-631.383.8903. Due to phone problems in NY, personally, I find it easier to use Text Messages or Facebook. Another part of this phase is for us to work with manufacturers and distributors and have material drop shipped to Bayshore, LI,
Phase Three:
This is the biggest and most important portion of this rescue and relief effort and is aimed at placing as much as possible right into the hands of those that need it most. Mellie and the POSH team has identified additional rescues, fosters, and animals families that need help the most. Working with the smaller and less well organized groups, we have had food and supplies delivered door to door, in fact directly at their front door.
A very big part of this phase is the boarding of desperate animals in healthy clean kennels, and foster homes, and for this we ask that you consider a monetary donation to our “Donate” button on our website www.humane.pro This is no small matter and we are already paying large kennel fees to keep as many animals as possible of the Euthanasia lists ate the NY area shelters. Given that many of the animals have medical issues, like Kennel Cough, this is a critical issue as the shelters do not have the resources to keep and treat sick animals.
