Myth: Purebred Dogs Can’t be Found in Shelters

August 19th, 2008 User Imagehoundsgood Posted in heard county animal control No Comments »

Awhile back, I dispelled the myth that good dogs cannot be found in shelters/county pounds. It is another common misconception that purebred dogs cannot be found in shelters. At one particular shelter, Heard County Animal Control in Franklin, Georgia, purebreds abound.

All of these dogs are URGENT. Their last day at the shelter is this coming friday. With a full shelter and more dogs on the way, they cannot hold any more.

This little dog is a purebred Jack Russell Terrier. She appears to have the broken coat coat type. The shelter is so crowded that she is in a crate in an overflow area. She is 15 lbs or less, and is deserving of a loving home.

Purebred young beagle - very nice boy!

Purebred Bluetick Coonhound. He has a tumor, but it may just be a fatty tumor - don’t know.
This dog has a mellow hound temperment, and ready to be your best friend.

Older 7/8 year old golden/lab. She appears to have been well taken care of. She doesn’t deserve to end her life this way. The listing states that she is 85 lbs, but someone who has looked at her believes that she is a bit lighter than that.

If you can find it in your heart to help one of these sweet dogs, please contact the shelter right away, or just go!

One More Day. Please Adopt or Rescue Them

August 16th, 2008 User Imagehoundsgood Posted in heard county animal control 1 Comment »

I know it seems that “wolf” has been cried at Heard County Animal Control.   The dogs and cats were going to be euthanized Thursday.  Then at the end of the day they were given one more day.  Now today, on the usual euthanization day, which was Friday, we were told that they would get just one more day.

What gives?  Are they just manipulating people?

No.  What had happened is that 3 hoarders were surrendering a number of dogs, making it necessary to euthanize the dogs who have been there.  On Thursday, two dogs left the building, but only one hoarder case came in, so it was not necessary to euthanize.    On Friday, which was today, there was some interest from local adopters.  3 dogs got out of the building with rescue, and several more were tagged.  However, there were a few dogs that were called about by the public.

Whoever is not adopted or at least in process by 1:00 PM Saturday (tomorrow/today depending on when you read this) will be euthanized.

Please see the entire list here

Here are just two of the hopefuls, waiting for a chance at life:

All American Black Lab! He is just a year old (if that). Typical lab personality, though he may have a dash of something else in him. He loves to run, romp, and play. There may be a sponsorship offer available to a licensed rescue.

This Beagle breaks my heart. Someone called interested in meeting him. Pray that they show or someone sees this and also expresses interest.

Senior - or almost senior - lab. 7-8 year old 85 lb girl. Just as sweet as can be.

The shelter is open only until 1:00 PM Saturday

A “Ready Made” Dog

July 30th, 2008 User Imagehoundsgood Posted in heard county animal control, saved! 2 Comments »

What is a “Ready Made Dog?”  In the rescue community, or at least among the people I know, it describes a dog who is looking for a home who is already leash trained, housebroken, or it is otherwise evident that someone has taken some care and put some time into.  They can easily fit into a new home with very little effort.

So may times I see ads on the internet or get requests from people seeing a posting about a dog on deathrow, and the first thing some people ask is “Are they trained?  Will they have accidents?”  My reply is always: “I don’t know.”  Dogs who are reliable in the house will have accidents at the shelter.  It is just not a normal place to be and dogs get scared.  Sometimes dogs who are not housebroken will be perfect model citizens at the shelter for those same reasons.  They might “hold it forever.” A dog that is in a new home may have a couple accidents in the beginning while still figuring out what is expected of them, or learning the household routine.

In otherwords, the “perfect dog” is few and far between.

It is wonderful that people want to adopt, but I admit, it is sometimes hard to hold one’s tongue when someone issues a laundry list of things a dog must already know and so

There is one dog right now who is at the shelter who knows “sit” and knows “heel.”  In truth, they never asked her to “heel” at the shelter.  She just does it on her own.  She walks nicely with you right at your side.    No one has come forward for this very nice dog.   Of course, its impossible to know at the shelter if she is housebroken or not, but if she is not, she is highly intelligent and would learn quickly.   She is a nice medium size, and because of her smarts and her coloring, they think she is a border collie mix.

Please give this loving and intelligent girl a chance. Out of area adoptions accepted! She only has until Friday at 4 to find a home or to be claimed by a rescue.

Blogger Saves Kitten’s Life

July 26th, 2008 User Imagehoundsgood Posted in heard county animal control, saved! 4 Comments »

cuteness.jpgWhen I have some free time, I have stopped at Holy Cuteness to get my smile for the day.  If you have not visited the blog, it is chok full of photos and videos of the most adorable animals that you have ever seen.   Truly the antidote for a blue mood.

Most of the time, shelter photos are not that great. They are blurry, have bad lighting, or the dog or cat is so scared wondering where their people are that they just don’t photograph well. There was an exceptional picture this week from the pound of a kitten that really showed how adorable she was. I didn’t really know if Holy Cuteness accepted submissions like that, but I thought it was worth a try.

cuteslittlecalico.jpgLinda could not have been nicer! She posted the kitten HERE. Not only that, but she had taken it upon herself to post the Kitten on forums she belonged to, etc.  And, you know what?   She found somebody to adopt the kitten!!

To me, this kitten was definitely being watched out for, as the people who adopted her just “happened” to be in Georgia on vacation!!  What were the odds of that?

This little baby kitten is on her way home thanks to Linda at Holy Cuteness!  If she was near you, Linda, this kitten would give you sandpaper tongue kisses for being instrumental in saving her life.

Visit Holy Cuteness! to get your dose of daily cute.

Want to give it a try and help a homeless cat or dog on deathrow find a home? Keep reading this blog for the latest scoop!  You can subscribe by rss/add to your google reader or favorite me on technorati. You may just see a face that steals your heart.

Pit Bull Spottings

July 21st, 2008 User Imagehoundsgood Posted in heard county animal control No Comments »

A few days ago, I posed a challenge to you all to see if you could Spot the Pitbull. The reason for my challenge was that most people who say that they don’t like Pit Bulls (everyone is entitled to their own breed preferences which is perfectly fine), and even go to lengths to Support breed specific bans in various localities don’t even know what a Pit looks like. Not only do breed brains rip loyal, sweet, well trained family dogs from loving and responsible owners who just happen to be Pit Bulls, but it also targets dogs that do not have a drop of the breed in them. Often times, many people see a dog that has similar markings/coat pattern and assume it is a Pit Bull also. Some are very closely related breeds, but sometimes they are really far off.

The Pit Bull is a medium sized dog, not a large breed.  Two of my readers mentioned that they took the test and their commentary creates an interesting juxtaposition that really proves the point of what folks against BSL (breed specific legislation) site as opposition to it.

Colleen took the test. Read about Colleen’s results HERE.   She mentions that her neighbor owns a Pit Bull, but is a very large dog/has a different body.   Indeed, Pits are NOT large breed dogs, but mediums.   In the past decade or two, people have been breeding them larger and larger so they are a very far cry from breed standards, or are crossing in much larger dogs like a Cane Corso or Mastiff to give them the larger stature.    She also mentions that this dog is unneutered has attacked her neighbor.   If you look at statistics on bite cases, you will see a pattern that clearly shows that unneutered dogs are involved a much higher percent of the dog attacks than dogs that are “fixed.”   Much of their wandering tendency and their tendency to get in a scrap with whomever gets in their way when they sense a female are curtailed when neutered.

Deatren took the test and  .   HERE,   She is an “aunt” to two very loveable Pit Bulls. In the future, I hope that she shows a picture of them!    She thinks that Breed Specific Legislation works on the “one bad apple principle” and its such a shame to penalize loving dogs.    When a dog is part of the family, is kindly cared for, including being neutered, the behavior of the dog is much different.

Dogs, no matter the breed, as a domestic animal, depend on us for their care.  Also, as a pack animal, they look to us and take our lead.   No matter the breed, if a dog is given love, proper care, and clear limits and boundaries, they become a good canine citizen.  Unfortunately, when we don’t, the dog takes the bad rap.  They don’t often look up the leash and consider that their owner may be the one to blame.

There are some very nice Pit Bulls this week that are desperate for homes.  This boy exhibits the typical triangular head of the Pit Bull terrier.  It is kind of obscured with his wide white markings.  This handsome brindle with a white face was treated kindly at one time, as he loves pretty much everyone.   Unfortunately, he has spent some time as a stray.

He is maybe a year, year and a half old at the most, and would thrive in a good home.  He is doing well interacting with the other dogs at the shelter.  He is living on borrowed time at the shelter, and his time is up this friday.  He was supposed to be seen by an adopter, so was held over last time but they never came.

His id number is 42508.   Shelter address:

Time Up List for Friday, July 18th, at Heard County AC

July 16th, 2008 User Imagehoundsgood Posted in adoptable, heard county animal control 3 Comments »

I am out of catchy or clever titles right now. The only name I can seem to give this post is an eponymous one. There are several cats and dogs on deathrow this week at Heard County Animal Control. You may wonder why I am always posting the time up lists. Some say that I don’t give people enough warning. Unfortunately, the dogs and cats just don’t stop coming in.

Again, just like I mentioned last week, the timestamp on the photos is incorrect. The photos were taken very recently, in the past few days!!!

1) I am afraid that this fluffy guy is going to get overlooked. Black dogs tend to get passed over. Either they don’t photograph well, or people just think they all look the same. This sweet dog also is being labelled a Lab/Shepherd, which you think would equal a big dog, but he isn’t.

He is only in the 30-40 lb range. He is “not too big and not too small.” So many people are looking for a nice medium sized, family dog and I am afraid they won’t believe how small he is from the photo. His hair sort of looks like a flat coat retriever with a bad haircut, but he is much smaller than the breed. His id is 53608. UPDATE: THIS BOY IS RESCUE PENDING!!

2) Next, is another extremely sweet black dog. BELOW LEFT No one is really sure what breed he is. I think he is labelled Husky / Rottie because of his coloring, but I am not really seeing Rottweiler . Lots of dogs are that color combo. He is ONLY 40-45 lbs and the poor sweet dog has hairloss just where a collar rubbed him!

He is a young guy and is very huggable. His id is 52808. REDLINED!!! WILL BE PTS TOMORROW!

3) Above, on the right, is a dog being called Boxer / Pit Bull. He looks like he leans more towards the Boxer side of the family. He is behaving well with another male dog as a kennel mate. He was a stray that wandered up to someone’s house and hung around with the children, but the parents wouldn’t let him stay. He is about 2 years old. His id number is: 50808 REDLINED!!! WILL BE PTS TOMORROW!

4) The dog on the left, below, is a very pretty (as you can see!) female brindle pit bull. If you have been thinking about a Pit Bull or have a soft spot for them, she is good with other dogs and is young and friendly. If given the chance, she has lots of great years to spend with you. She is only a year old, if that - barely graduated from puppyhood. REDLINED!!! WILL BE PTS TOMORROW!

5) Above, at left - look at that funny face. The wide white blaze on this boy’s face makes him so different looking. He is about 1 1/2 years old at the most. He was very friendly and happy when he came to the shelter, but now he is getting a little bit sad. He misses his old life, perhaps. Being at the pound is no life for a dog. REDLINED!!! WILL BE PTS TOMORROW!

6) At left, Pretty Beagle Mix Girl. I am mystified as to why she is still here. She was saved by attrition before. She was picked up on the side of the road. Nobody ever called looking for her. UPDATE! Saving Shelter Pets is coming to her aid! READ HERE! 7) At RIGHT, is a 7 month old yellow lab pup. She lived with a family, but they could no longer take care of her - SHE IS NOW RESCUE PENDING!. 8) BELOW LEFT 25-35 lb mixed breed girl. UPDATE: SSP can come to her aid! READ HERE

9) ABOVE RIGHT- sweet male mixed breed dog - 20-25 lbs UPDATE! Saving Shelter Pets can come to his aid!! READ HERE10-13) Four sweet kittens from the same litter. Mom was adopted already. They need a loving home or rescue. These are indeed 4 different kittens, not a different photo of the same pair - REDLINED!!! WILL BE PTS TOMORROW!.

14-18) Litter of kittens 42008-42408 Five beautiful kittens looking for local adopters.

Adoption fee for kittens:
$25.00 + signing a binding spay and neuter contract for kittens under 7 weeks old.
